Sunday 20th June was a hugely successful day for LGC. Not only did we host the very popular ‘Four Clubs’ event, drawing many congratulations both for the state of the course and for our catering, but the Letchworth team also ‘won’ the trophy!
This annual competition features Letchworth, Knebworth, Dunstable Downs and East Herts Golf Clubs, each one hosting the event in turn. It is a pretty competitive afternoon, but always sociable and with a sense of fun. With tea and cakes at the half-way house, Pimm’s on the patio before dinner, and amusing speeches from each captain (in reverse order) there was loads to enjoy regardless of the scores.
Even the weather behaved itself as our team of twelve mixed pairs aggregated 377 foursomes stableford points. Star performers were Debbie and Ian Hammond who put together a massive 41 points score.
However this team total was matched by East Herts, a great performance from the visitors, and it is the first time in the 50 (ish) year history of the competition that a tie has occurred. Each club will now hold the trophy for six months.
The positive comments that we received from all our visitors was very heartwarming and the Captain would like to thank all of the helpers who contributed to such an enjoyable day.
And the Spitfire Trophy too
On the day before, Letchworth also won back the beautiful ‘Spitfire Trophy’ which is played for annually over two legs with RAF Henlow.
